Narthana specializes in the Pandanallur style of Bharathanatyam, the style well renowned for its intricate footwork and elaborate Abhinaya. The Pandanallur style has a reputation for its emphasis on linear geometry in Adavu technique and for the intensity and understatement in Abhinaya. The institution not only trains the students in Bharathanatyam but also imparts the rich Indian culture. Classes include theory sessions in which the Hasthas, Karnas, Bedhas and various other technical aspects of Bharathantayam are taught. The structure is designed in a methodical way that prepares the dancer for Salangai Pooja and Arangetram.
Salangai Pooja:
It is the first public solo performance. Traditionally, the Salangai Pooja (prayer for the bells) is conducted after the dancer achieves a base level of competency, and is the first occasion on which a dancer wears her bells in public performance. The brief prayer will be followed by an one hour performance.
Arangetram:
Arangetram marks the beginning of a dancer's life, when he or she graduates from a student to professional artist. The dancer presents a 2 to 3 hour solo performance based on a traditional repertoire much resembling the one established by the Thanjavur Quartets at the end of the 19th century. The brothers' selection of dance pieces, from Alarippu to Thillana, became the repertoire of choice during the renaissance of Bharathanatyam at the beginning of the 20th century, and remains a legacy to this day. The arangetram celebrates the years of dedication of both the student and Guru to the art form.
Classes are conducted for all ages and gender. Students who have prior exposure to Bharathanatyam will be placed in respective levels after a set of evaluations.
Level I - Beginner
Level II - Advanced
Level III - Professional
At Narthana every dancer learns from every other dancer. Each dancer works at his/her own skill levels and pace and dancers will encourage each other. Any unhealthy competition within the class will require relevant action. You are here to mould yourself into a better human being and help yourself and others find joy in dancing.
Classes are conducted in Fremont & Sunnyvale, California. Duration of the class increases as one progress through the levels. Additional classes might be scheduled if a dancer is preparing for a Salangai Pooja or Arangetram or any performance.
